The Origins of the Book
Political manipulation—both within and without democracies—have been staple tactics of major near-peer governments for decades.
During the Twentieth century’s Cold War period, there were documented instances of the security services of both the United States and the former Soviet Union, actively manipulating elections, worldwide. Their goal: to ensure that politicians and parties sympathetic to their causes at the time won, in whatever country was in their crosshairs.
More recently, during and after 2016 US Presidential Election, the media carried innumerable stories of foreign interference in the campaigns. Reportedly, this interference has included social media disinformation, tampering with voting machines, running smear stories in concert with actual campaigns, and illegal foreign donations.
For my new book, The Price, I imagined a world where a non-state actor–in this case a shadowy new, well-funded, terrorist organisation–built off those past incidents to manipulate a new US election for their purposes.
After years and years of state manipulation and the recent, dramatic political and social polarisation in America, I hope that I am wrong that democracy could be truly subverted in such a way…
From a writing perspective, The Price was started in snippets on airplanes traveling all over the planet… just like my previous novel, The After.
I have always found that I do my best writing in a dark airplane cabin with only the hum of the engines in the background.
Like many others, the Global Pandemic threw me for a loop and I had to learn to write in a more disciplined manner, a few minutes every day.
Hopefully, the final result was not impacted by the change in writing venue!

The Origins of the Book
During and after the Global Financial Crisis, The Federal Reserve and other central banks engaged in a series of financial experiments rarely ever practiced by the alchemists of finance. Every previous example of what was grandly termed “Quantitative Easing” has ended in spectacular disaster, including John Law’s in France, the Weimar Republic in post-World War I Germany, and most recently Zimbabwe. The fact that countries such as the United States decided to embrace the policies used by Mugabe’s Zimbabwe made me think about how things would end. In the Weimar, the experiments led to the collapse of the economy and eventual the rise of National Socialism and World War II. In the case of The After, I imagined how the current experiments in the United States and the developed world would end and hope I am wrong…
This book was written in snippets on airplanes traveling all over the globe. I have always written stories to amuse myself instead of watching the movies after I finished whatever work I had dragged along with me. This story started out as a few pages, but I fell in love with the characters and nervous about the continued machinations of the Federal Reserve. Each flight led to a few more pages, and eventually the book I sincerely hope you enjoyed.
